The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot. (Prov. 10.7)
President Biden likes to say, “History will judge…” Indeed, historians judge from all kinds of angles, but God is the real judge. No matter how we attempt to rewrite and organize the facts, God knows the truth, and He is the one who blesses or curses. God repays the righteous for their obedience and punishes the wicked for their disobedience.
We are entering another crazy election season where our options lack moral discretion. I cannot vote for Vice President Harris because she is rabidly pro-abortion and is, obviously, a vacuous vessel, tossed by every wind of change. The Associated Press recently attempted to paint her as a moderate on abortion but only revealed that she remains a hard-core advocate. She wants to reinstate Roe vs. Wade to “protect abortion rights.” What about the unborn baby’s rights? She selected a running mate (Tim Walz) who is, possibly, an even stronger lover of abortion.
The name of the wicked will rot.
On the other side of the fence, we have a known entity in former President Donald Trump. It is impossible to make a case that he champions morality. He holds a view of abortion that I think is also immoral, but the difference is he has no plans to create any federal policy on abortion. He has said repeatedly that the abortion question now belongs to the states, and that’s where it should stay. Even though I disagree with his thinking on abortion, I trust that he has no plans to make any sort of federal abortion policy. Of course, Kamala Harris’s campaign pushes the lie that he plans to make a federal abortion ban! Nope. He does not. Unfortunately.
Abortion is a huge moral issue of our day, but there are many other policy issues which broadly affect our country. All public laws eventually boil down to moral issues. Morality deals with shoulds and should nots, oughts and ought nots, rights and wrongs.
Should we allow migrants to pour into our country largely unchecked? A lovely lady in Springfield Ohio thoughtfully shares what an influx of Haitian illegal migrants has done to her small town—it’s tearing it apart and creating a difficult environment in which to live. Should we force our citizens to pay for the health care, housing, and feeding of the millions of people who have broken our laws by sneaking across our border? Should we put our children and families in danger by allowing unvetted masses into our towns? These are moral questions. You might say there is a moral question on the other side: Should we refuse to allow people into our country who are hurting, hungry, and looking for a better life? These moral questions all have right and wrong answers.
Donald Trump believes it is immoral for us to allow an unchecked influx of illegal migration. Kamala Harris has, for three and a half years, allowed the greatest amount of illegal border crossings this country has ever seen. She can insist that she plans to be tough on the border when she’s President, but her record speaks for itself. She has had three and a half years, and President Biden specifically nominated her to handle the border issue. She believes it’s immoral for us to not let people in, apparently. These two positions cannot be held at the same time—one is immoral and one is not. In fact, we have sanctuary laws in our country to account for people who are fleeing oppression. We have a process. And the process does not involve sneaking across the border. You can ask for help, but you should not demand it, and you should not set the terms by which someone else will help you. That is immoral.
Donald Trump does not buy into “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” When the ACLU is against you, these days, that’s a good sign. He believes DEI is immoral because it judges a person by the color of his or her skin and not by the person’s character, which is the exact opposite of what Martin Luther King, Jr. said. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are among the leading champions of DEI. She believes “equity” means we should “all end up in the same place” economically speaking. The only way that can happen, according to socialist theory (which has never worked and never can work), is by taking money from the rich and spreading it around to the poor. Bring down the mountains and raise up the valleys so everything is one level playing field. Should we steal from the rich and give to the poor? Or should we encourage the rich to give to the poor? Scripture teaches one of those and not the other.
Our country is departing from biblical wisdom and gravitating to forms of idolatry, thinking government is the giver of law and government should be the savior of the people, when neither is true. You could vote Democrat or Republican with this idolatrous and disastrous viewpoint. Any a Republican says, “If we don’t get our candidate in this year, our country is done for; our democracy is at stake,” he’s spouting this idolatry. Likewise, when a Democrat says, “If we don’t get our candidate in office, this country will revert back to the old, broken ways; democracy dies in darkness,” he speaks with the voice of idolatry.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding (Prov. 3.5). Don’t trust in government, men, or women. Trust in the Lord.
As Christians, we might ask ourselves this moral question: Given the immorality on both sides of the fence, should we even vote? That’s a question you’ll have to answer for yourself, but I plan to. If you vote, you should carefully consider the morality of the current situation. One side leans much more towards policies built on biblical morality, and the other side opposes biblical morality. For me, the choice is obvious.
At the same time, as a Christian who casts a vote, I will not put any faith in my vote or in the one who wins this election. My faith is in Jesus Christ who is King over all nations and all men, and He will bring me safely through whatever immoral overlords happen to sit in the seat of oppression. I thank God that I have the freedom to publicly write such things!
May God truly bless us over the next few months with clear wisdom and divine guidance.
